Mattress? It's Easy If You Do It Smart

A wrong mattress can be the reason for sleepless nights. But how do you find the right mattress for healthy, restful sleep? We tell you what to look for when buying and introduce you to different types of mattresses.

One third of our life is spent in bed. Therefore, it is important that we do not give up good advice when choosing the mattress, or save at the wrong end.

The agony of choice

Body ailments, such as back pain, can be avoided. You should keep in mind that a mattress not only has to carry body weight but also support the spine. In addition, the mattress must be flexible to adapt to the body position again and again, without fixing.

Hardness and softness of the mattress not only depend on personal preferences. As a rule, if it is too hard, it does not yield enough, and the lumbar spine is not supported. The pressure loads on the body are then too high.

On the other hand, if you choose a mattress that is too soft, your body sinks too low, and you spend all night in a rigid, forced posture.

In so-called "thebest-mattress", the shoulder and pelvis should press in to keep the spine straight. People who do not weigh so much and have no back problems need a particularly adaptable and soft mattress, especially in the pelvis and shoulder area. Heavy persons, on the other hand, need a strong supporting effect in the pelvic area in order to avoid a "hammock effect".

Basically, after five to ten years, a mattress should be replaced for hygienic reasons. Removable, washable covers are recommended.

Spring mattresses

  • Mattresses with metal springs
  • Spring mattresses are available in different variants. One of them is the "simple" spring
  • Mattress, which is area elastic because the springs are connected together.
  • Another spring mattress is the cheaper core mattress. Countless steel springs share the burden here. They lie next to and above each other. The feathers are also surrounded by fabric here. Due to the low point elasticity, however, they also give way over a relatively large area and thus adapt better, but not optimally, to the resting body.

Pocket spring mattresses, in which the springs are individually sewn in fleece, are qualitatively the better alternative. This mattress type has a very good point elasticity, because only the springs give in, which are currently loaded.

Also each spring is packed in a fabric cover. These feathers react selectively to the body weight, because they are only connected in the center of the fabric cover. Smaller springs increase the point elasticity.

Spring mattresses generally ensure good air circulation. This is best done with pocket spring mattresses.

Foam mattresses

A few years ago they were considered a bad and uncomfortable sleeping pad, now they have become a good alternative to more expensive mattresses thanks to new materials. Foam mattresses adapt to the body and have a good point elasticity.

Best material qualities without fillers are important here. Simple foam mattresses are rather not recommended.

The most common foam mattresses are made of cold foam. Good cold foam mattresses have a density of over 40kg per cubic meter. Volume weight is the weight per cubic meter of raw mass.

Cold foam mattresses absorb moisture well. Through small cavities in the interior, the air can circulate better.

Even better, more expensive viscoelastic high-speed mattresses (made of visco-foam) adapt to the body as they react to its heat. The pressure distribution is optimized, too much fixation is prevented by lower layer thicknesses.

Foam mattresses are highly flammable, which is why they are provided with a refractory coating.

In addition, the mattresses are almost free of dust mites because they do not like foam.

latex mattresses

Mattresses with rubber foam filling

Latex mattresses are made of synthetic or natural latex, but mostly as a hybrid of both. Pure natural latex mattresses are rather rare. Basically the higher the proportion of the natural substance, the better the quality of the mattress!

Latex mattresses are very elastic and adapt to the body very well. Due to the high point elasticity, they give way under pressure only at the stressed areas. This increases the sleeping comfort.

Almost all latex mattresses are hygienic and dust-free. However, they can only absorb moisture poorly. Nevertheless, in order to achieve good ventilation, they are provided with cavities. This ensures good moisture and heat regulation.

A latex mattress needs some care for a long life. So the mattress should be kept upright at regular intervals for some time, then the dammed up moisture can escape well. In addition, latex mattresses may only be stored in rooms with more than 10 degrees Celcius, otherwise mold would quickly grow.

People are different. They vary in size, have different physique and individual sleep needs. In addition, every person has a personal temperature and lying sensation. There are side, back and abdominal sleepers. The good news: Cold foam mattresses are considered all-rounders and are suitable for almost all types of sleep. The cold foam mattress is therefore in the search in any case to shortlist. With a clever construction and the appropriate quality, a cold foam mattress will cope with almost all sleep types and demands.

Cold foam mattresses have many advantages. But also disadvantages

When lying down the cold foam mattress scores over many special foams such as viscose scars. Even a stress test, the cold foam mattress must not shy, if a high-quality model was selected.

The advantages of cold foam mattresses in detail:

Less back pain: Cold foam provides predominantly good supporting power, even with different reclining positions. Due to its point elasticity, a mattress made of cold foam is particularly suitable for people with back problems. It optimally adapts to the lying position of the body and keeps the spine in a healthy position. At Bruno we donate a layer of natural latex to the cold foam core. For even better weight distribution and better sleep.

Rest in your sleep: With cold foam mattresses, there are no annoying creaking or squeaking noises, as can occur, for example, with spring mattresses. Especially for people who move a lot during sleep, this is a great advantage.

Long shelf life: For high-quality PU foams. Good cold foam mattresses can last up to 10 years. But then you should be replaced.

Hygienically clean and good moisture transport: Cold foam has an open-pored material structure and therefore provides good air circulation. So the body moisture is optimally derived and created a hygienic climate.

Good price / performance ratio: Thanks to industrial production and high demand, good mattresses can be found even in the mid-price segment.
